Bras for a Cause marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Bras for a Cause is kicking off its eighth campaign in October.

“All money raised benefits Franklin County breast care patients,” according to Rhonda McFarland, who started the campaign in 2016 with Carol MacDougall, of Concord, Mass., a 24-year breast cancer survivor and continuing supporter of the fundraiser.

Donations, which include financial contributions and new and gently used bras, will be accepted through Oct. 31 and support Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance, Mercersburg.

The cash donations are used to assist patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer who live in Franklin County, providing gas and food cards and help with energy bills, among other services. The bras collected are given to Waynesboro Human Services and Grace’s Free Closet in Greencastle for distribution.

McFarland, who heads up the effort along with Marj Cober, said the campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed in October.

“You can pledge up to a given amount depending on the number of bras donated, such as $50 for 50 bras donated. “Last year we collected over 1,000 bras,” McFarland said.

Collection sites for bras include Carl’s Drug Store and Zeger Dental Clinic, both of Greencastle; Chambers Apothecary, Here’s Looking at You, Norland Pharmacy and Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, all of Chambersburg; St. Thomas Apothecary of St. Thomas; and New Reflections Hair Salon, Waynesboro Apothecary (formerly Savage Family Pharmacy) and Waynesboro YMCA, all of Waynesboro.

Financial contributions may be sent to Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance at 1601 Mountain Road, Suite 101, Mercersburg 17236, with Bras for a Cause on the memo line. For more information, people may call McFarland at 717-762-8720 or Cober at 717-762-4422.
