Part of the beauty of high school sports is that anyone can win on any given day.

Last week was no exception as a handful of teams from the Local.News coverage area sprung surprise victories.

In girls soccer, waves went through the Mid-Penn Colonial Division when Waynesboro sprung a 2-1 upset over first-place Boiling Springs. The second-place Maidens didn’t have long to celebrate, however, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to third-place Greencastle-Antrim.

Waynesboro’s soccer team was avenged, however, by their classmates on the girls volleyball team, who shut out the Blue Devils by a 3-0 score. It was Greencastle’s first loss in the Colonial.

In Washington County, North Hagerstown’s boys soccer team remain unbeaten at 7-0-1, while the Smithsburg girls flag football team jumped to a 4-1 record after pitching a shutout last week.

Finally, the Mid-Penn Golf Championships were held on Wednesday, and we counted five area athletes who punched their tickets to the District 3 Championships. Tyler Fortney, of Waynesboro, shot a 70 to tie for first place in the boys meet, while the girls meet featured district-qualifying performances from Chambersburg’s Emily Rensch (3rd place, 84 strokes) and Alaina Morris (15th, 100) and Waynesboro’s Abby Byers (7th, 89) and Marissa Musolino (19th, 101).

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
