CHAMBERSBURG – Franklin County Commissioners, joined by municipal officials and project partners, celebrated the opening of the new Hickory Run Road Bridge with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 17. County Bridge 63 carries Hickory Run Road (T-268) over Conodoguinet Creek in Lurgan Township approximately 1.3 miles northeast of Orrstown Borough.
The new bridge replaces the previous single-lane structure with a double-lane, single-span non-composite prestressed concrete bridge that measures 55 feet, 6 inches long and 28 feet, 4 inches wide. The new bridge also addresses structural deficiencies and eliminates the weight restrictions imposed on the former structure, originally built in 1963 and reconstructed in 1990. Construction on this project began in June and was completed in early October.
“We are pleased to celebrate the opening of the new Hickory Run Road Bridge,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “Because of this project, everyone who travels Hickory Run Road – our residents, our emergency responders, our school buses, our agricultural community – will have an improved, safer commute.”
The $1.28 million project was funded through Pennsylvania Acts 44 and 89, which provide funding for transportation and infrastructure projects across the commonwealth. Wen-Brooke Contracting, Inc. of Three Springs served as the contractor for this project while Herbert, Rowling & Grubic, Inc., oversaw the engineering and inspection phase.
“This project was possible thanks to great partners like HRG, Wen-Brooke Contracting, the Lurgan and Southampton township supervisors, and the county’s property management team and bridge crew,” Horst said. “We also want to thank local residents and those who travel Hickory Run Road who were inconvenienced by the detour for their patience while we completed this project.”
The Hickory Run Road Bridge is one of 91.5 bridges owned and maintained by Franklin County. Hickory Run Road officially reopened to traffic after the ceremony.
