New amphitheater to enhance downtown Chambersburg

CHAMBERSBURG -Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Spring Street Amphitheater project, located at the corner of Spring Street and Lincoln Way West next to Chambers Fort Park. This project marks a significant step toward revitalizing downtown Chambersburg, promising to offer a unique venue for community gatherings, performances and outdoor events.

The new amphitheater will hold over 400 people and feature hardscape seating, a covered performance space, landscaping, fencing, pathway lighting and other amenities. In 2022, the Chambersburg Borough received an $879,865 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, helping to fund this transformative project.

A diverse lineup of speakers attended the ceremony, highlighting the collaborative spirit that has propelled the project forward. Among the speakers were DCI Board Chair Jenna Kaczmarek, DCI Amphitheater Committee Chair Stacy Mellot and DCI President Sam Thrush. Other notable attendees included Representative Rob Kauffman, County Commissioner Bob Ziobrowski, Christie Yerger of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development; Allen Coffman of Chambersburg Borough Town Council, Mike Ross of Franklin County Area Development Corporation and Project Administrator John Boozer.

“This project has been years in the making, beginning with early planning efforts such as the Village on Falling Spring Master Plan in the late 1990s and evolving through a series of conceptual designs in 2015,” said Sam Thrush. “This amphitheater will bring economic growth to downtown Chambersburg by attracting residents and visitors, sparking new business opportunities and creating a vibrant cultural hub for our community.”

Phase 1 of construction includes essential earthwork, landscaping and hardscaping, as well as electrical and water installations. By the conclusion of this phase, Chambersburg’s downtown will be home to a fully operational amphitheater, with more features to follow in future phases. The expected completion date is Fall 2025.

The ceremony also highlighted the local support for the project, including golden groundbreaking shovels provided by the Franklin County Area Development Corporation and soil preparation services from Hornbaker’s Landscaping and Bartlett Trees.
