With North Hagerstown’s Lauren Stine leading the way, runners from the Local.News coverage area were all over the podium at last weekend’s MPSSAA Cross Country Championships.

Stine blitzed past the field in the 3A race to finish as state champion in 18:23, nearly 24 seconds faster than the runner-up. Stine’s Hubs finished sixth in the team race. Jupiter Schellhase, of South Hagerstown, also competed and finished 36th in 21:02.

Another North Hagerstown runner, Walker Mason, had a big day in the boys race, finishing second in the state with his time of 16:04, guiding his team to a third-place finish in the process.

The 1A race served as a highlight reel for both Smithsburg’s boys and girls squads, with each team securing runner-up finishes. Leopards Michael Wynkoop (16:29) and Dylan Herbst (16:34) finished 2-3 in the boys race, while another Smithsburg runner, Cora Gentzel, placed second in 19:51 in the girls race.

In girls volleyball, the dream of a third-straight state championship lives on for North Hagerstown, which advanced to Tuesday’s MPSSAA semifinal round. Greencastle-Antrim wasn’t as fortunate, as the Blue Devils fell in the PIAA quarterfinals.

Finally, a historic first season in MPSSAA girls flag football came to an end last weekend. Smithsburg’s team was the top squad from our area, taking second in the Washington County final, before competing in the state tournament at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
