WAYNESBORO – Mowrey Elementary School hosted its annual Veterans Day program on Thursday, Nov. 7, with a celebration involving students from many grade levels. As in previous years, the school invited all veterans and U.S. armed service members to attend the celebration.

Family members and close friends of Mowrey students were encouraged to join for this meaningful performance that recognized all those who served and continue to serve the nation during times of war and peace.

Music teacher Alicia Shemon and the third grade students performed the veterans program. The students presented the book “Pepper’s Purple Heart – A Veterans Day Story.”

The cast included Claire, played by Brielle Strizziere; Rebbie, portrayed by Wyatt Breneman; Mom, played by Rebecca Holtry; Billy, portrayed by Aaron Martin; Tonya, played by Claire Fogle; Mrs. Buckley, portrayed by Raya Springer; Mr. Jones, played by Gabe Miller; and several speakers including Cassidy Wagaman, Shawn Teays, Avery Butler, Scotlynd Sourbier, Hadley Greenwood, Reagan Freelove, Sawyer Lambert, Layla Ott, Ava Baker, Taylor Chamberlin and Camden Alexander.

Pepper the dog was also featured alongside Kate Barr. Special thanks were extended to Scout Packs 19 & 97 and to Kohl and Liam Baer (and Mrs. Baer), Fin, Elwood and Gideon Black, Briar Baker, Nathaniel Theibert, Annabella Bordelon, Gage Cramer and Carter Haluska. The Barr Family was thanked for loaning “Pepper” for the event.

Fifth grade students distributed letters to veterans expressing gratitude and sharing what freedom meant to them. Additionally, kindergartners created artwork to thank the veterans for their service.
