Hagerstown after-school program set for current year

HAGERSTOWN – In a continued effort to support young students, the City of Hagerstown has announced its collaboration with the Hagerstown Housing Authority for an after-school program at the Park Side Community Building on Suman Avenue for the current school year.

This initiative aims to create a safe and structured environment for students in kindergarten through third grade focusing on homework assistance, character development and enrichment activities, city officials said. The program operates Monday through Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m., providing additional support to young students during critical after-school hours.

The program primarily targets kindergarten through third grade students but is open to all children up to sixth grade if space allows. The program’s location at Park Side Community Building is particularly convenient for residents, city officials noted, and the commitment to supporting children from diverse backgrounds highlights its inclusivity. The afterschool service assists with academics and emphasizes life skills, character building and positive peer interactions.

The city aims to have at least four staff members for the program, including a lead and three assistants, ensuring a small student-to-staff ratio that supports individualized attention, city officials said. Currently, the program has three staff members: one lead and two assistants.

According to national research, programs like these play a significant role in children’s lives by enhancing school performance, building stronger work habits and supporting future aspirations. Studies have shown that youth-oriented initiatives like this program create long-lasting benefits, impacting families and communities by fostering positive behaviors and community ties.

The lead staff is responsible for planning and overseeing daily activities, maintaining attendance records and providing regular program updates. This staff member also serves as a key liaison between the program and local schools, identifying specific academic needs and areas for improvement. Supporting staff members assist with homework and coordinate special projects, helping children stay engaged and develop important social skills.

Community leaders said they believe this program is worthwhile, as it aligns with Hagerstown’s commitment to quality youth programming. By ensuring students receive personal attention, mentorship and an enriching environment, the city hopes to foster a stronger educational foundation for local youth. With continued support, this program aims to positively influence participants’ academic paths and create lasting connections with families across the Hagerstown area.
