GREENCASTLE – Jason Batistig is the new Greencastle police chief. Batistig, a retired patrol sergeant with 25 years of service with the Hagerstown Police Department, was appointed by the Greencastle Borough Council on Nov. 4.

Batistig retired from Hagerstown in March 2023, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, community service and dedication, Greencastle officials said. Over the years, he received multiple awards, including two Governor’s Citations, a Bronze Medal of Valor and a Silver Medal of Valor, underscoring his bravery and commitment to public safety. He also served as a supervisor and a K-9 handler.

Beyond his years of direct service, Batistig is certified under Pennsylvania’s Act 120 through the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission and is an instructor in various law enforcement disciplines. After his retirement, Batistig took on the role of program coordinator at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Criminal Justice Center Police Academy, further demonstrating his dedication to preparing the next generation of officers.

Batistig’s deep roots in the Greencastle community, where he has resided since 2004, add to his investment in the role. His commitment to serving Greencastle’s citizens was evident as he took the oath of office immediately after his appointment, surrounded by family, friends and active and retired officers. The ceremony was a testament to the community’s support for their new chief, according to Greencastle officials.

Greencastle Mayor Ben Thomas warmly welcomed Batistig, stating, “Chief Batistig is not only qualified but also deeply connected to this community. His approach to community policing and dedication to public service aligns with our mission to keep Greencastle safe and vibrant. We are confident that his leadership will guide our department forward.”

Chief Batistig steps into his new role at a time of transition for the department. He fills the vacancy left by the sudden death on May 31 of Keith Russell, a long-time Greencastle police officer who was sworn in as chief less than a month earlier. Russell replaced John Phillippy, who retired at the beginning of the year.

Over the past 11 months, the Greencastle Police Department has continued to deliver essential law enforcement services under challenging conditions. “The Greencastle Police personnel have been unwavering in their dedication to protecting and serving this community 24/7,” Thomas said.
