HAGERSTOWN – Washington County Commissioners will have a busy day Monday, holding their regular 9 a.m. meeting as usual in county offices, followed by a 6 p.m. meeting in Sharpsburg.

The 9 a.m. meeting will include a discussion of the remaining county share of the federal bi-partisan American Rescue Plan Act money, totaling $3.4 million. The recommendation under consideration is to spend $3 million on another phase of the police/fire/EMS training center.

Another $434,550 would be used to design and build an all-inclusive playground at Marty Snook Park. The new playground would include play areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12, rubber surfacing and accessible routes to playground facilities and restrooms, sensory areas, shaded gathering areas and seating, a fenced-in play area and equipment for inclusive play and socialization for all children, county officials said.

In that same session, commissioners will hear an update on the county’s new strategic economic development plan. RKG Associates Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia, has been working with the county Department of Business and Economic Development over the past several months laying the foundational work.

In addition, a steering committee of 15 community representatives in various industries
has been assembled to assist in the formation of the new plan. This plan will guide the county’s efforts over the next 5-10 years.

The 9 a.m. meeting will be at county offices at 100 W. Washington St., Suite 2600. The evening meeting will be in Sharpsburg City Hall, 106 E. Main St. During that meeting city leaders and executives will offer reports, as will county leaders. Both meetings will include citizen comment periods.
