HAGERSTOWN – As winter approaches, the Washington County’s Office of Emergency Management shares information from the National Weather Service encouraging residents to prepare for the season’s challenges during Maryland Winter Safety Awareness Week, running from Dec. 10–16.

This initiative, spearheaded by the National Weather Service in collaboration with the Maryland Department of Emergency Management, emphasizes the importance of winter weather safety and preparedness.

Throughout the week, citizens will have access to vital information on various winter weather hazards, including snowstorms, ice storms and extreme cold. Daily updates and practical tips will help readers safeguard their families, homes and communities.

The NWS has created a comprehensive Winter Safety webpage, featuring downloadable infographics and social media-ready content that individuals and organizations can easily share. These resources are designed to spread awareness and encourage proactive planning.

Visit the Winter Safety webpage at https://www.weather.gov/lwx/2024MDWinter for more details and tools to prepare for the winter season.

Key topics this week include:

  • Understanding winter weather alerts and forecasts.
  • Tips for staying safe during snowstorms and icy conditions.
  • Preparing emergency kits for homes and vehicles.
  • Protecting pipes, pets, and people from freezing temperatures.
  • How to stay informed and connected during severe weather events.

“We encourage everyone to take time this week to review their winter safety plans,” said Alan Matheny, Director of Emergency Management & Communications . “Simple steps taken now can make a significant difference when winter weather strikes.”
