Mr. C. Gary Barton, 79, of Waynesboro, PA passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 23, 2025, in his home.

Born September 8, 1945 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Lester M. and Naomi G. (Kefauver) Barton Essich. He was a lifelong resident of the Waynesboro area.

Gary graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the Class of 1963. He later graduated from Shippensburg University with a Bachelors Degree in Education.

He and his wife of over 34 years, Shelva J. (Lesher) Barton, were married on May 26, 1990.

In his early life, Gary taught high school business at the Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School. He later worked for over 30 years with the 1st National Bank of Waynesboro – Blue Ridge Summit office and serving as the vice president of the bank. Prior to his retirement in December 2024, he worked with Dick, Stein, Schemel, Wine and Frey, LLP, Waynesboro, for over 10 years.

He was a member of Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blue Ridge Summit, Rotary Club of Waynesboro, Waynesboro Country Club, and Waynesboro Jubilee Committee.

Gary was an avid golfer and fan of the New York Yankees, especially Derek Jeter. He spent much of his time in later years caring for his wife.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, John L. Barton (Amy) of Valrico, FL and Audra L. Lucas (Jay) of Chambersburg, PA; two step-sons, Tim Crider (Barb) of Rouzerville, PA and Greg Crider (Sue) of Gettysburg, PA; two grandchildren, Tyler Bock and Aaron Bock; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Dennis Barton of Lititz, PA, Susan A. Toms of Waynesboro and Nancy Fream of Hanover, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Herbert J. Essich, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 28, 2025 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro with Pastor Carl Batzel officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday evening, in the funeral home.
