Mr. Carroll L. “Rudy” Freshman, 75, of Greencastle, PA, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at his home on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Born on December 27, 1950, in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Charles J. “Runt” Freshman and Sarah (Tice) Freshman. Rudy was a 1969 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

Proudly serving his country, Rudy enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for seven years before being honorably discharged in February of 1977. His military service was a source of great pride throughout his life.

On July 10, 1978, Rudy married the love of his life, Shirley (Myers) Freshman, in Hagerstown, MD. Together they shared many years of devotion, friendship, and love.

Rudy was a hardworking and loyal man who spent much of his career employed at Letterkenny Army Depot. He also worked as a truck driver for Bowman, New Century, and Tice’s Milk Transport, and later served as manager of the Greencastle VFW.

He was a life member of Greencastle VFW Post #6319, the Greencastle American Legion Post #373, and Greencastle Masonic Lodge #443. Rudy cherished the time he spent with friends at the American Legion and enjoyed camping on the Legion grounds.

In his leisure time, Rudy loved watching football—especially cheering on Penn State and the Dallas Cowboys—keeping up with the news, and listening to old-time country music, which was always playing in his truck. Known for his ever-present grin, Rudy always made you feel like he was “up to something,” and his sense of humor brought joy to those around him. He was a devoted husband and father, a caring brother and uncle, and a friend you could always count on. Rudy was always there when someone needed him, and his kindness, loyalty, and strong work ethic will be fondly remembered.

In addition to his beloved wife, Shirley, Rudy is survived by his daughter, Casey Leigh Freshman of Greencastle and a nephew, J. Wendell, whom Rudy thought of as a son ; his siblings: Donna Rae Wolfe and husband Leroy “Bud” Wolfe, Virginia Untersher and husband Arvid Untersher, Beverly Cleaton and husband Don Cleaton, Daryl W. Freshman and wife Sandy Freshman, and Sherry K. Bingaman and husband Chester Bingaman, all of Greencastle; his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Jake Johns (husband of the late Karen Johns), Nancy Freshman (wife of the late Charles E. Freshman), and Kim Freshman (wife of the late Richard L. Freshman), all of Greencastle; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Rudy was preceded in death by his siblings, Ronald L. Freshman, Charles E. Freshman, Karen L. Johns, William Dennis “Buck” Freshman, and Richard L. Freshman.
