Dr. Mephie Mbuya K. Ngoi, 81, of Evanston, IL, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at his home. 

He was born on May 22, 1944, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the late Ilunga Ngoi Johnathan and Unissa Ngoi Umbalo.

Dr. Ngoi was an AP chemistry teacher at the prestigious Evanston Township High School in Evanston, IL for 23 years until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure, the high school had an exceptional reputation and was nationally ranked as one of the top academic programs for high schools in the nation. Many of his students were children of dignitaries and high-ranking officials. One of which was President Jimmy Carter’s grandson. Many of his students were also Westinghouse award winners and went on to have prolific careers in the field of science, medicine, etc. After his retirement, Dr. Ngoi worked with Northwestern University to educate and prepare minority students for careers in science and math.

In his free time, he enjoyed building and working with computers as well as photography. He even had his own studio and dark room in the basement of his house.

He is survived by his wife Daphne W. Ngoi of Evanston, IL, whom he married on September 20, 1975; son Betavy “BT” Ngoi of Las Vegas, NV; 4 brothers Betavy Ngoi, Paul Ngoi, Remy Ngoi, and Jeff Ngoi; 2 sisters Maria and Claudette; and multiple nieces and nephews both in the United States as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 sisters.

Graveside services will be private in Lebanon Cemetery in Chambersburg, PA.
