George P. Buckey, age 99, a resident of Menno Haven in Chambersburg and formerly of Waynesboro, PA, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Born on April 11, 1926 on his family farm ‘Kilfadda ‘, in Union Bridge, Maryland, he was the son of the late Earle L. Buckey and Marion Yates Buckey.
On May 5, 1951, George married Martha ¨Marty¨ Bare Buckey in Westminster, MD. They settled in Waynesboro, where they built a beautiful life together over 69 years of marriage. Mrs. Buckey died on October 16, 2020.
Mr. Buckey graduated from high school in 1942 and continued his education at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA from 1942 to 1944 before entering military service. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a graduate of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA. As a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the 33rd Infantry Division in Japan.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia in 1950, where he received high honors and was elected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. In 1962, he received a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Sloan Fellow.
Mr. Buckey began his career with Landis Machine Company in 1950 as a sales and service trainee. He later joined the sales department and steadily advanced through the organization. In 1958, he became Assistant to the President and in 1962 he was named Vice President and Assistant General Manager and was elected to the board of directors. In 1975, after Landis became part of Teledyne Inc., he was appointed President and served in that role until his retirement in 1987, concluding 37 years of dedicated service.
George was deeply committed to his community, serving in leadership roles for the National Metal Trades Association, the National Machine Tool Builders Association, and the Pennsylvania Technology Center. Locally, he was a Director of the First National Bank and Trust Company and Financial Trust, Inc. He also held leadership positions with numerous nonprofit organizations including the Waynesboro Area United Way, the Waynesboro Hospital Authority, the Summit Health Endowment Fund, and Renfrew Museum & Park.
Passionate about local history, George was a founding member of the Waynesboro Area Industrial Heritage Trust, where he also served as President and Director. A faithful member of Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, George was also a Rotarian for more than 65 years. He was an Emeritus Member of the Penn State Mont Alto Advisory Board. Together with his wife, he endowed three scholarships to support future students. He & his wife were also avid birders taking many trips to explore worldwide habitats. He also enjoyed fishing & gardening.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Marshall Buckey and Elizabeth Buckey Clark, son-in-law, Brent Clark of Ocean View, DE, and two grandchildren, Sarah Daisey Clark and Benjamin Buckey Clark.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M., Thursday, July 10, 2025 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Pipe Creek Cemetery, Uniontown, MD.
