Jim Markel age 71 of Waynesboro, PA unexpectedly passed away into God’s loving arms at his home on Monday January 6, 2025.

Jim is survived by Judith Markel, his wife of 51 years, two brothers Richard Markel and Howard Markel Jr. He is also survived by five nieces: Denise, Karyn, Kris, Kim, Patti-Jo and three nephews: Todd, Travis, and Troy.

Jim was pre-deceased by his father Rev. Howard K. Markel Sr. and his mother Charotte Markel, as well as two sisters: Patricia Kustenbauder, Thelma Vickerd and three nephews: Gary, Donald, and Bobby.

Jim loved life and over the years pursued a variety of different activities, careers and interests including owning 4 horses, 3 house rabbits, golfing and going to the beach.  Jim especially loved his fur babies: Horse “Goldie” and house rabbit “Shortcake”.  They will also miss him as well as the abundant treats he provided.

Jim graduated from Youngsville High School in 1971. In addition, he received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in English from Northeastern University, Boston Massachusetts in 1986 and a Master’s Degree in Higher Education from Boston College in 1993.

During his work career, he was in higher education procurement at Boston University, Boston College, University of New Hampshire, and Frederick Community College. He also served as CEO/Treasurer of the Massachusetts High Education Consortium, and Business Manager at the National Fire Fighters Foundation in Emmitsburg Maryland.

After retiring, he trained and became a 3rd party QMS Lead Auditor with Performance Review Institute near Pittsburgh, PA, and co-owner of ISO Advantage consulting firm with his wife Judith.

He also worked at Warren General Hospital, Warren, PA and served as Youth Pastor at the Pleasantville, PA United Methodist Church.

Other interests:

Jim sang bass in the Spokesmen Gospel Quartet, District Chorus and Madrigals at Youngsville High School.

He was in also in the Senior Class Play, Music Council and the Sports Editor for the Broadwalk School newspaper. Jim counseled and directed Christian Youth Summer Camps at Camp Findley, Findley Lake NY and played football at Randolph NY Central School.

A memorial service for Jim will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, April 27, 2025 at the Doubletree by Hilton, 3200 South Ocean BLVD, Myrtle Beach, SC (phone 843-315-7100).  The service will be officiated by the Rev. Tim Phanco, Assistant Pastor at the Risen Christ Lutheran Church, Myrtle Beach.
