Major John Steven “Steve” Henderson, U.S. Army Retired, 87 of Waynesboro, PA passed away Sunday morning, May 25, 2025, in the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born October 31, 1937 in Rock Springs, Wyoming he was the son of the late John and Emma E. (Endrizzi) Henderson.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Wyoming in 1959 and his Masters Degree in Education from Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, Monterey, CA in 1972 with a focus on the Middle East and M.A. in International Studies from the American University, Washington, D.C. in 1977.
Steve retired in October 1979 as a Major after 20 years of service in the United States Army. He was awarded numerous medals and awards for this time in the service, including the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
He and his wife, the late Michele D. (Flavin) Henderson, were married February 14, 1991 in the Old Post Chapel at Ft. Myer, VA. Mrs. Henderson passed away September 27, 2013.
After retiring from the Army, Steve went on to begin working for the Defense Intelligence Agency in multiple locations across the country as an intelligence research analyst oriented in the Middle East and Iran. Mr. Henderson retired from the DIA in 1992.
He was an active member of the Clan Henderson Society; life-member of Military Officers Association of America; The Retired Officers Association; National Active and Retired Federal Employees; University of Wyoming Alumni Association; American University Alumni Association; and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey Alumni Association.
He is survived by two children; Nels C. Henderson of Santa Barbara, CA and Soraya Mei-Ling Haglund of Monterey, CA; two grandchildren, Hannah Henderson and Paul Haglund; a brother, Carl D. Henderson and his wife Vicki of Estes Park, CO; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, David M. Henderson; and a brother, John Richard Henderson.
Services and burial with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery will be private.
