Mr. Richard L. “Dick” Hoover, 88, a resident of Providence Place, Chambersburg, PA passed away Friday morning, December 13, 2024, in Mercy House, Chambersburg.

Born February 15, 1936 in Chambersburg, PA, he was the son of the late Lester George and Maude Ruth (Embly) Hoover. He lived his early life on S. Potomac Street, Waynesboro, PA.

He graduated from Waynesboro Senior High School with the Class of 1953.

Dick entered the United States Army in September 1958 and served as a clerk at Fort Knox, KY. Following his active-duty service, he continued to serve with the National Guard Army Reserves until 1965. During his service, he was twice awarded the Sharpshooter Medal, in 1963 and 1965.

He and his wife of over 65 years, Lois E. (Lehman) Hoover, were married on November 29, 1959.

Following his discharge, he worked for a short period at Landis Machine Company, Waynesboro. He later went to work as a systems analyst at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. He retired in February 1989 after more than 34 years of service.

After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Myrtle Beach, SC to enjoy life at the beach. They returned to Waynesboro in July 2009.

Dick was a member of Otterbein Church, The Eagles Club and Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, all of Waynesboro. He also helped to organize his class reunions for many years.

He loved Penn State football and attending his granddaughter’s volleyball games. He was an avid golfer, who enjoyed playing in card clubs with his friends, being a competitive table tennis player – winning many Senior Olympic medals throughout the years and most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Karen Levy and her husband, Geoffrey of Hendersonville, NC, Susan Mickley and her husband, Dennis of Chambersburg and Donna Harne and her husband, Eric of Waynesboro; two grandchildren, Tyler Mickley and Jenna Harne; one great-grandson, Heath Mickley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the last of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Claudine Hawbaker; and two brothers, William Hoover and Thomas Hoover.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, December 18, 2024 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro with Pastor John Hoffman officiating. Burial will be private in Antietam Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Wednesday afternoon, in the funeral home.
